Temecula, CA – Motorcyclist Killed in Freeway Accident
Temecula, CA (November 18, 2018) – According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, a motorcyclist was killed in a car accident that took place on Friday afternoon on the 15 Freeway.
The deceased rider was identified as Gary Wilson, 33, of Murrieta, California by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office. According to their report, the California Highway Patrol said that Wilson was riding his motorcycle straddling the left and middle left lanes on the 15 Freeway headed northbound when he crashed into a 38-year-old Camp Pendleton woman driving a minivan. The impact caused the cyclist to veer uncontrollably into the middle of the roadway where he slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer that was being driven by a 56-year-old man from Corona, California. Wilson was then ejected from his bike and landed in the freeway. The Riverside County Fire department responded to the incident. Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The exact cause for the collision is unknown at this time. It is also unknown if either of the other drivers involved sustained any injuries. The investigation into the cause of this tragic accident is still ongoing.
Motorcycle Laws in California
We would like to extend our deepest, heartfelt sympathies to the friends and family of Gary Wilson. Our hearts go out to you in this incredibly difficult time.
Creating a safe driving environment is the responsibility of everyone on the road. California does not have any laws on its books that allow or prohibit motorcycles from riding down the lanes in between other cars, a practice known as “lane splitting”. Some important safety tips for those who ride a motorcycle include:
- Avoid riding in the blind spots of the vehicles around you, especially large trucks
- Be mindful of the posted legal speed limit at all times
- Always assume that people in cars do not see you
These common sense rules will benefit the safety of every driver on the road.
If you have been injured in an accident that you believe was caused by a motorcyclist who was lane splitting, then you need to hire legal representation immediately. Due to the fact that this act is in a grey area of the law, you will need an attorney with years of experience investigating motorcycle-involved traffic accidents on your side.
