The Devil’s Dozen, Part 1
Monsanto’s Round-Up Weedkiller has, at this point, reached a level of notoriety that was last achieved by a chemical when LSD escaped from its labs in the 1950s and landed firmly on the tongues of a nation’s youth. Perversely, this new chemical is getting nowhere near the fear-mongering and propaganda that was so eagerly heaped upon the harmless psychedelic and you can be sure its intention is far more nefarious than aiding perception and personal revelation. Chemical agro-giant Monsanto has committed a whole host of dark deeds and you come into contact with almost all of them daily.
Saccharin
What is it? – Saccharin is an artificial sweetener that has been with us since the 1800s. It did not develop its popularity as a sugar alternative until the 1900s. This is all thanks to the efforts of Monsanto, which planned to produce saccharin for the Coca-Cola company. Initially lauded for its capacity to provide the sweet flavoring without providing the calories, saccharin fell under attack in the 1970s when a study exposed the fact that it caused cancer in lab mice and lab rats. This caused it to be listed on the National Institute of Health’s “Carcinogen List”. After mounting pressures, however, the study was dismissed as skewed in its results, and the toxic artificial sweetener was taken off of the list. To this very day, it can be found in a majority of the food and drink we consume, and other products such as toothpaste as well.
Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCBs)
What is it? – Polychlorinated biphenyls belong to a class of man-made, organic chemicals that can also be called chlorinated hydrocarbons. First used by the Monsanto company in the late 1920s to help provide fluids that acted as coolants for some of the more popular brands of electric transformers, electric motors, and capacitors. These items were domestically manufactured here in the United States from 1929 to 1979, after which they were banned altogether. PCBs have been associated with causing cancer. They have also been associated with contributing to a number of negative health effects on our immune, nervous, endocrine, and reproductive systems. Banned since 1979, PCBs are no longer being used, but their destruction continues to persevere. A study done in 2011 revealed that PCBs are still being found in the bloodstreams of pregnant women. Prior to the ban, PCBs were found in commonly used items. Some examples would be caulking, cable insulation, adhesives, oil-based paints, and plastics.
