UPDATE: Pine Valley, CA – Robert Bruno Dies in Multi-Vehicle Accident on Interstate 8 Freeway
Pine Valley, CA (February 6, 2019) On the morning of February 6th, a fatal multi-vehicle accident took place on Interstate 8 Freeway going west near the Pine Valley Bridge. According to the reports, the accident occurred at around 5:15 a.m. on an icy-slick roadway.
A blue Ford-150 pickup truck spun out on a patch of black ice and crashed into the bridge on the westbound lanes of I-8. The driver of the truck was stuck inside of the vehicle and a 48-year-old good-samaritan named Robert Bruno pulled over behind the truck and turned his hazard lights because the driver of the damaged truck had none. A few seconds later, two more vehicles were involved in the crash. The third vehicle tried to swerve and brake, but it was struck by a fourth vehicle. All of the vehicles were careening towards Bruno who either instinctively jumped or was struck by the crashing cars and went over the guard rail. Sadly, in the fog and confusion, he could not see that he was, in fact, jumping off of a 450-foot bridge into the canyon below which resulted in his death.
When California Highway Patrol and emergency responders arrived at the crash scene, they called in a helicopter to try to locate Bruno below the bridge. When the police helicopter located Bruno, rescuers had to hike down into the bottom of the canyon to recover his body.
Officials are trying to figure out whether he was struck by a vehicle or just instinctively tried to jump out of the way of the crashing vehicles when he fell from the bridge.
Officials also found a 4-month-old in one of the vehicles. Fortunately, the child did not appear to be injured.
The police are currently investigating this accident.
We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the good-samaritan Robert Bruno’s family and friends at this shocking and heartbreaking time in their lives. Our thoughts are with them and the other people who were involved and injured in this accident.
