Walnut Creek, CA – Chemical Van Involved in Multi-Car Wreck on Interstate 680
Walnut Creek, CA (February 23, 2019) – A van carrying hazardous chemical materials was involved in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 680 on Thursday morning, according to California Highway Patrol.
The crash, which was originally thought to involve three cars, forced police to close two lanes in the southbound direction and created a Sig Alert with severe traffic that stayed in effect until around 12:15 p.m.
A Kia Sportage hit the back of a Mercedes Sprinter right before 9:00 a.m. as both cars were heading towards the South Main Street exit. The woman driving the Kia was transported by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. The driver of the Sprinter was uninjured.
The Sprinter was carrying chemicals and chlorine, and it may have been leaking from the van. There was a strong odor of chlorine that was coming from the area after the crash happened.
However, when officers arrived, they realized that the chemicals had spilled but were actually still contained inside the van and did not spill onto the freeway.
