Police Chases Cause Accidents In California
High-speed police chases cause the deaths of hundreds of people – law enforcement officers, alleged suspects, and innocent bystanders. The wrongful deaths and personal injuries caused by these chases are a top cause of vehicle accidents.
Two-thirds of those injured or killed in fatal car accidents caused by a police chase are innocent drivers or pedestrians.
Pursuits by law enforcement are dangerous. More people are killed by pursuits than by police firearms. Police departments must only chase offenders when the following happens:
- It is safe to pursue a suspect.
- Forcible felonies are involved by a suspect.
Officers must always be aware that, during any police chase innocent drivers can be killed or injured in a car accident. Â They should decide whether the need to catch the fleeing driver is larger than the need to protect the public from potential auto accidents.
