Worldwide Use and Consequences of Roundup

In the 1970s, the agricultural company Monsanto developed a herbicide called Roundup. It quickly became the best selling herbicide in the entire world. However, numerous pending lawsuits have begun springing up by those exposed to the chemicals in Roundup. These lawsuits allege that prolonged exposure to this particular herbicide causes various forms of cancer including non-Hodgkins lymphoma and certain forms of leukemia.

If you or a family member were exposed to the herbicide Roundup repeatedly over the last few years and have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma or leukemia, it is in your best interest to speak with a qualified legal team that has experience managing Roundup lawsuits. At Brady Law, we’re ready to defend you against the negligent behavior of Monsanto.

What Is Roundup?

Roundup is handled and used regularly by many people who work outside including landscapers, groundskeepers, and farm hands. The herbicide has the potential to form strong concentrations in the soil of agricultural fields, in the food we consume, and in the water we drink. The active ingredient found in Roundup is a chemical called glyphosate, which is a non-selective herbicide. As a non-selective weedkiller, the chemical kills most of the plants it comes in contact with, including both weeds, flowers, and crops.

Roundup is known as a “postemergence” herbicide which simply means that it cannot be applied until after the weeds have begun to sprout. It is not preventative and doesn’t attack and kill seeds. The glyphosate in Roundup essentially works by disrupting the protein synthesis in plants. Without those amino acids, the plants just stop growing.

Roundup can be used for spot weed control but cannot be used for general application on things such as grasses and crops, unless those crops are specifically designed to be resilient to Roundup. It’s reputation as a potent weed killer led to its worlwide use and application on yards, fields, gardens, and parks around the world.

While Monsanto continues to claim that exposure to large quantities of Roundup is not dangerous, the scientific community doesn’t fully agree. In recent studies, the Agency for Research on Cancer has determined that there is a strong likelihood between extended exposure to glyphosate, the active chemical in Roundup, and certain types of cancers.

Though Monsanto denied these connections, the company is facing several class-action lawsuits because of these unidentified risks.

Lawsuits Against Roundup and Monsanto

There i currently a multitude of pending lawsuits against Monsanto. The almost universally claim that years of exposure to the chemicals in Roundup caused users to develop non-Hodgkins lymphoma and certain types of leukemia. Furthermore, the lawsuits also claim that Monsanto has long since known of the connection between Roundup and these cancers but failed to issue proper warnings to protect consumers. In an attempt to protect the excessively high profits the company was making off of the product, Monsanto, according to the suit, went so far as to ghostwrite scientific papers defending the chemical as safe for humans. If Monsanto knowingly put users at risk to protect their bottom line, their victims have a legal right to pursue compensation to cover their medical bills, lost wages, and other damages.
