Yuba County, CA – Jamila Habib Killed in Fatal Pedestrian Crash Lowe Avenue
Yuba County, CA (February 22, 2019) – A woman was struck in a fatal pedestrian crash that took place at the intersection of Hammonton Smartsville Road and Lowe Avenue Thursday morning, February 21, around 7:30 a.m.
The woman, according to police, was identified as Jamila Habib, 72. The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene of the accident, where they found the driver who struck Habib.
The driver, identified as 45-year-old Virginia Castaneda, had been operating her Dodge Caliber and driving southbound. She had stopped at the stop sign on Lowe Avenue when she started to accelerate left, never seeing Habib. The two collided.
Habib received major injuries and was taken to the hospital. However, while there, she tragically passed away due to her traumatic injuries.
There were multiple passengers in the Dodge, all of whom were uninjured in the accident. Police continue their investigation into the accident at this time.
We would like to take this time to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Jamila Habib, whose life was taken too soon in this accident.
Pedestrian Accidents in California
In 2013, researchers found that pedestrian accidents were at an all-time high in California. In fact, these accidents accounted for 14% of all road fatalities that happened in just 2013 alone, making California fifteenth on a list of states with the most pedestrian accidents. These serious accidents happen every day on our roads, though we take many measures to reduce the number of accidents that occur with the hopes that, one day, there will be none.
