Herbicide and Bran Flakes: Glyphosate Found In An Alarming Number Of Breakfast Foods

Remember those old Life cereal commercials? “Mikey likes it!” Well, hopefully, Mikey has learned to be a touch more discriminating in his adult years because a recent study conducted by the Environmental Working Group found potentially unsafe amounts of the notorious herbicide glyphosate from Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer in a number of popular breakfast cereals and snacks including Cheerios and Quaker Oats. The EWG research tested 29 different varieties of grain-based products and found that all but five tested positive for glyphosate, which has recently been labeled as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization.

Which Foods Tested With Unsafe Levels of Glyphosate?

According to the Environmental Working Group study, 75% of the products that were tested had glyphosate levels well above the 160 parts per billion benchmark that has been deemed “safe”. It is critical to note that the safe threshold for glyphosate in food is listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as being much higher than the standard allowed by the Environmental Working Group.

None of the foods violated the limits set up by the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the herbicide, but the EWG uses a much more reserved scale. The proposed glyphosate limit set by the state of California, which would be the most restrictive in the country, still allows for glyphosate chemical levels that are well over a hundred times higher than the EWG’s maximum. The environmental group says that the reason for its lower threshold is to act as an added buffer for young children, as “exposure during early life can have more significant effects on development later in life,” according to Dr. Alexis Temkin, the lead scientist on EWG report.
