California’s Fatal Pedestrian Crashes

Pedestrian accidents are very common in California. Many people walk, skateboard, rollerblade, jog, or run on our busy streets. Unfortunately, there are many more people who use cars, trucks or SUVs and when the two interact, crashes can happen.

This can happen on a sidewalk, in an intersection, on a street or in a crosswalk or on a street. Many times this can happen with children that are around schools or playing in or around their neighborhood streets.

Statistics about pedestrian incidents are:

  • A pedestrian accident happens every 2 hours in the U.S.
  • Pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely to die in a traffic accident than a driver or passenger of a car
  • Persons 65 years old or older make up 20 percent of all fatal accidents
  • For children between the ages of 5 and 15, being hit by a car is the number one cause for fatalities
  • Alcohol or drug impairment is involved in 48 percent of all crashes involving an auto and pedestrian accident resulting in injury or death
