Why You Should Be Eating Organic, Part 2
In recent months, we have all become aware of the various dangers of the chemicals that are used on our foods. The frontrunner in this topic is the herbicide known as Roundup that is produced and manufactured by agricultural giant Monsanto. Roundup has been linked primarily to the development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma but studies indicate that its main ingredient, glyphosate, may cause several other types of cancers as well. So, if dying of a perfectly avoidable illness is not on your list of things to do today, how do you handle this problem? One of the best ways to stop this happening to you and your family is to eat organic.
Organic food is becoming increasingly popular with each passing year. Navigating the labyrinth of organic food labels, benefits, and claims can be complicated. Is organic food really better for your physical and emotional health? Do genetically modified organisms, herbicides, and pesticides really cause certain types of cancer and other diseases? How do you decipher the labels on your food?
When food is labeled “organic” it refers to the way agricultural products are grown (or raised, in the case of animals) and processed. While the regulations concerning what exactly defines organic may vary from country to country, in the United States, organic crops must be grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, bioengineered genes, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. In case you were wondering, Monsanto develops and manufactures endless varieties of the first three things on that list. Organic livestock raised for meat, eggs, and dairy products must have access to the outdoors and be given organic feed. They may not be given antibiotics, growth hormones, or any animal by-products. Read that again. They must not be given any animal by-products. This, sadly, has to be a rule because factory farms are quite notorious for taking the carcasses of animals that have died of disease and feeding them back to those who are still living. It only gets worse from there.
The Benefits of Organic Food
How your food is grown or raised absolutely has a gigantic impact on your mental and emotional health. It also impacts the health of the environment in a major way. Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their modern-day conventionally-grown counterparts.
- Organic produce contains fewer chemicals – Chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides are ubiquitously used in modern, common agriculture. Residues from these chemicals remain on, and in, the food that we eat.
- Organic food is often fresher. This food is fresher because it doesn’t contain the typical onslaught of preservatives that are designed to make it last longer. Organic produce is most often produced on smaller farms closer to where it is sold because it will not stand up to being shipped great distances. This is also why organic produce is very seasonal, unlike regular produce where you can buy fresh pineapples in the middle of January.
- Organic farming is better for the environment. Organic farming practices cause a reduction in pollution, save water, decrease soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less overall energy. Farming without pesticides is also better for the local birds, fish, and other animals.
- Organically raised animals are NOT given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal byproducts. Organically-raised animals are given more space to move around and access to the outdoors, which help to keep them healthy. Feeding livestock animal byproducts raises the risk of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, otherwise known as mad cow disease. The attempt to ward off diseased involves the use of antibiotics which can then create antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Then, should you ever get sick and require antibiotics, you will have built up an unnatural tolerance to them through your consumption of meat or your consumption of milk and, as a result, they may not work for you the same way they didn’t work for the cow, and we will have come full circle.
- Organic milk and meat are richer in some nutrients. Results of a 2016 study show that levels of specific nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50% higher in organic milk and meat than they were in more conventionally raised versions.
- Organic food is GMO-free. Genetically Modified Organisms are plants whose DNA has been altered in ways that would never occur in nature or in conventional crossbreeding techniques. This is most commonly done in order to be resistant to pesticides.
