California Firefighters Among Those Injured in Camp Fire
We have discussed many people who were at particular risk for injuries and even death in the California Camp Fire event, such as children and elderly who are most susceptible to the destruction and the risks of smoke inhalation and burns. However, one more party is also at risk for injuries in these events, and they are those who attempt to protect us and extinguish the fires that bring these serious results to our towns and cities: firefighters.
By the end of November, over 9,400 firefighters were battling the wildfires that spanned more than 240,000 acres and took the lives of 65 people. These numbers have since been adjusted and now there is the possibility that more than 100 people have lost their lives, with many more receiving injuries. A variety of firefighters were deployed for the serious task of battling the wildfires, 1,500 of which were prison inmates who stepped up to the plate to combat the fires through a volunteer firefighting program centered around rehabilitation.
There are many risks that firefighters are facing due to exposure to the wildfires that have caused many harm. For instance, they are about nine times as likely to experience burns and twice as likely to experience illnesses that are related to high levels of heat, such as heat stroke and dehydration. Though safety is taken into consideration for all of those who have braved the wildfires, many have still become injured and some have even lost their lives.
Many people have already reported serious injuries in firefighters, with some receiving serious burns on their bodies and time spent in the hospital. A fire captain at one of the fire sites even received serious burns to his hands, neck, arms, and face and laid on the dirt on the ground until he was rescued. Though many are fortunate to have survived, others have unfortunately not made it.
Filing a Claim
At the end of November, the burn center at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento was filled to the brim with those who received serious injuries in the Camp Fire. By November 13, there were ten patients with injuries, with eight of these individuals in fair condition and two in critical condition. Five firefighters were severely injured, some of which sustained severe burns to their bodies.
