Cruise Ship Accidents, Injuries And Sexual Assaults

Personal injuries on cruise ships can occur in a variety ways.  A cruise ship is a vehicle just like an airplane or car, only much larger.  Similar to other vehicles, the stability and safety of a cruise ship can be significantly affected by bad weather conditions, mechanical failures, and navigational problems.  Any of these problems can cause the ship to tilt or rock unpredictably, collide with other ships and stationary objects, or lead to on-board fires.

Injuries that result from cruise ship accidents can range from minor bumps and bruises to severe or catastrophic personal injuries or even death.  These catastrophic personal injuries can include severe burns, neck and back injuries, spinal cord injuries, head injuries, and brain injuries.  Cruise ship passengers can also suffer significant personal injuries and medical problems as the result of food-borne illnesses and viruses.  Sexual assault by other passengers or crew members is, unfortunately, also a common occurrence on cruise ships.

If you are injured on a cruise ship, the first thing to do is get medical attention immediately.  The severity of certain injuries may not be obvious just after an accident.  This is particularly true with soft tissue injuries or injuries to the head, back and neck.  Any delay in properly diagnosing and treating such injuries can lead to dire consequences for the victim.  While medical attention will generally be available on all cruise ships, the quality of that care may not be the same as it is on land.  In the event of a severe personal injury, passengers should not hesitate to insist on being brought ashore to receive proper medical attention.

If a sexual assault or other crime occurs on a cruise ship, it should be reported to the ship’s captain immediately.  Passengers should also notify the appropriate U.S. government authorities, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Embassy, or local law enforcement.
