Brain Injuries

Brain injuries are among the most catastrophic and life-altering injuries that a person can suffer.  An injury to the brain can interfere with its ability to communicate with the rest of the body thereby resulting in a number of physical, cognitive, and emotional or behavioral impairments.  Severe brain injuries can lead to lifelong disability or even death.

A “traumatic brain injury” is an injury to the brain caused by an external physical force or blow to the head.  These injuries typically result from accidents such as traffic collisions, falls and sports-related impacts.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 5.3 million Americans currently have long-term disabilities resulting from traumatic brain injury.  That is roughly 2 percent of the population.

Recent data from the CDC illustrates the prevalence of traumatic brain injuries in the United States:

-On average, approximately 1.4 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury in the United States each year. Out of those 1.4 million:
-50,000 die
-235,000 are hospitalized, and
- 1.1 million are treated and released from the emergency department.

-Among children ages 0 to 14 years old, each year traumatic brain injuries result in:
-2,685 deaths
-37,000 hospitalizations
-435,000 emergency room visits

These figures can be both overwhelming and intimidating, but they can also help those suffering from brain injury and their caregivers recognize that they are not alone.  There are many government, non-profit and private sector organizations that are specifically devoted to supporting brain injury victims and helping them cope with the daily challenges they face.

If the brain injury was caused by an accident that can be traced to another party’s negligence or defective product, pursuing a legal action against those responsible should be considered by victims and their families.
