Burn Injury OverviewSevere burn injuries are extremely painful and devastating to both victims and their families. Burn injuries are typically classified by degree, i.e. first-degree, second-degree, and third-degree. A first-degree burn only affects the outermost layer of skin and, while painful, they generally require little or no medical treatment. A second-degree burn is deeper than a first-degree burn and can result in tissue damage and blisters. Second-degree burns can be very serious and will require medical treatment to repair the skin and reduce the risk of infections or permanent scarring. Third-degree burns are the most significant of the three. They are much deeper than second-degree burns and often involve nerve damage. Third-degree burns require immediate medical treatment and frequently result in the need for skin grafts and other surgeries. Some severe burns can even lead to the death of the victim. All three types of burns can be caused by fire, direct heat from an object, hot liquids, steam, friction, chemicals, electricity or explosions. Severe burn injuries will generally require long-term hospital stays, multiple surgeries and on-going rehabilitation. Many of the burn injury cases we have handled involved severe scarring of the face or head, damage to the torso or genitals, and deformities of the limbs. The mental and emotional pain and suffering that goes along with these severe burn injuries cannot be overstated. They are as real and devastating to the victims as any physical problem they may experience. The Brady Law Group has extensive experience working with plastic and reconstructive surgeons throughout California and we will do whatever it takes to get our clients the medical care they need. We also frequently help our clients obtain counseling, job re-training and mental health care services to assist them with the psychological and emotional issues they face after an accident. |
