Brain Bruising
Bleeding that occurs deep within the brain is a condition referred to as an intracerebral hemorrhage or an intracerebral contusion. As with all forms of brain bleeding, brain contusions, i.e. bruising, can occur in accidents that involved either a direct impact to the head or as the result of a whiplash action. In a whiplash-type accident, the brain is thrown forward against the front or side of the skull, then bounces backward in the opposite direction, sometimes making contact with the skull a second time on the rebound. This type of injury is referred to as a “contra-coup” injury. Bruises on the brain will often occur both at the initial point of contact with the skull and at the opposite side of the brain when it is bounced backward.
