Common Gas Tank Defects
There are a variety of design and manufacturing defects that can render a vehicle unsafe. When one of those defects is related to the gas tank, the vehicle occupants, first responders and innocent bystanders are put at great risk due to fire and explosion. Some of the most common defects affecting vehicle gas tanks include:
- Placement of the gas tank outside of the vehicle’s frame, also known as a “sidesaddle” or “outboard” gas tank
- Placement of the gas tank between the rear axle and rear bumper
- Sub-standard fuel line materials which break or leak
- Fuel lines without safety valves, and
- Defective fuel filler necks
Any of these defects can lead to catastrophic personal injuries and deaths in vehicle accidents. Of course, the main risk involved with defective gas tanks is that they will cause fires and explosions. Even those in the automotive industry will concede that a person should not survive an accident just to be severely burned or killed because of a defective gas tank. However, industry actions and deceptions over the past thirty years have led to exactly that fate for countless consumers.
