Seat Belt Manufacturing
Seat belts are a critical part of the vehicle’s overall safety system. Vehicle manufacturers can design, build and install the seat belt themselves but such tasks are typically outsourced to other companies. The development of a new automobile can sometimes take many years. Third party parts manufacturers are often involved throughout that process and will work with the vehicle manufacturer to design, build, and test specialized components that will later be incorporated into the finished product.
During the development cycle, component part manufacturers will often give advice to the automaker, help customize the product to the vehicle, and conduct their own testing on the systems before and after integration into the completed vehicle. This process is generally followed by most major vehicle manufacturers with regard to seat belts and other components of the vehicle’s safety system.
Because of their role in the design, construction, testing and integration process, seat belt manufacturers are often joined in lawsuits related to defective seat belts. These third party component part manufacturers play a key role in placing the product into the chain of commerce and thus can potentially be held liable for personal injuries that are caused by defects in their products. Of course, the vehicle manufacturer and other entities involved with design, construction, marketing and sale of the vehicle or part can also be liable for injuries in product liability lawsuits.
