Excess Slack and Retractor Failures

The function of a seat belt retractor system is to tighten the belt against body thus restraining the occupant during a collision.  Most retractors have an internal pendulum which swings forward when a motor vehicle stops suddenly or when the seat belt is loaded with energy by the body quickly moving forward.  If the retractor system is defective in any way it can allow excess slack in the seat belt either prior to, or during an accident.  Excess slack in a seat belt can render it completely ineffective in an accident thereby allowing the occupant to make violent contact with the vehicle’s interior.  It can also become a separate hazard in a vehicle crash by allowing the occupant to submarine down the seat and be hooked around the neck by the belt.  In either case, retractor failures and other defects that lead to excess seat belt slack can result in significant spinal cord injuries, brain injuries or death.
