Injuries from Airbags
If an airbag is defective or otherwise fails to properly protect the occupants of a vehicle during a serious accident, catastrophic personal injuries can result. Depending on the severity of the underlying crash and the type of airbag failure, these injuries can include severe burns, neck and back injuries, spinal cord injuries, head injuries and brain injuries. It is not uncommon for such severe injuries to result in life-long afflictions such as brain damage and paralysis. Sadly, the statistics show that many people also lose their lives when airbags fail to perform correctly.
Defective airbags can either directly cause or exacerbate injuries during an accident. For example, if an airbag deploys in a minor collision, or if it deploys with excessive force, it may directly cause an injury such as whiplash, or blindness. Improper use, mixture or handling of certain chemicals during the design or manufacturing of an airbag can also directly cause severe chemical burns to a vehicle occupant in an accident. Of course, if a serious accident occurs and the airbag fails to deploy entirely, the vehicle occupant will likely sustain more significant injuries than they would have if the airbag was there to protect them.
Because airbags are an integral part of the vehicle’s overall safety system, a defective airbag will make the entire vehicle less safe. Similarly, defects in other components of the safety system, such as a defective seat belt, will render the airbag less effective in preventing injuries and deaths in an accident.
It can be very difficult to determine whether an injury was caused, in whole or in part, by a defective airbag. Investigating and proving causation in a defective airbag lawsuit will generally require highly experienced experts and attorneys.
